ULTRA BLOCK SHIELD
£124.00
The Ultra Block Shield is part of the GSI Performance Technical Training Range and can be used in isolation or as part of the full system of products. This piece of equipment has been specifically designed for training both the double under-strike of OL blocking, and the explosion hand-strike of DL working get-off. It is also good for working the forearm/shoulder lift off combo blocks.
The Ultra Block Shield has a number of grip handle patterns which allows the shield holder to hold it horizontally or vertically, thus creating different angles and widths for the blocker to practice on. The shield holder can also change the angle of the shield dependent upon the degree of difficulty within the practice.
ULTRA BLOCK SHIELD
450mm x 750mm x 225mm. Weight 2.5kg
17.7in x 29.5in x 8.9in. Weight: 5.5lbs
- The Ultra Block Shield has been designed with the purpose of isolating the skill of the defender dropping his/her body height as they approach contact, or re-enacting defenders ‘getting skinny” or twisting/rolling in contact.
- Held horizontally it will stress the blocker in being able to rise through the initial contact and finish. With this training aid the technique can be practised in a controlled safe environment before going “live”. It is very important to work on training the blocker to keep hips below strike point rise as the lift/block continues.
- The shield carrier can change the orientation vertically to challenge hand placement and force blockers to work to stay connected to a non-flat surface, as they will see on game day. The training aid encourages excellent timing, accuracy and body movement coming into, through and finishing the block.
- Make sure the player works all the different blocking combinations vs various shield orientations and angles to train the ability to stay connected, strain and finish the block in any situation.
- As a coach, look for speed of movement and accuracy throughout the drill. The player should always be in control of their body movement, leverage, foot placement, and with this shield will be challenged to stay connected and finish the block.
- Make sure that the blocker is always dominant in the collision. As confidence comes with using the training aid, both the blocker and the shield carrier can increase the speed of the drill.
- Make sure the blocker is working different angles of approach – zone blocking vs combo, straight ahead vs angle.
- A third player or coach can stand behind the shield holder to give them support as well as provide additional resistance.
