V BLOCK SHIELD

£128.00

The V Block Shield is part of the GSI Performance Technical Training Range and can be used in isolation or as part of the full system of products. This piece of equipment has been specifically designed to assist coaches and players in coaching different blocking techniques, isolating specific movement patterns against the shield. Training with this piece of equipment helps you achieve and maintain accuracy and work on specific hand/forearm strike placement on zone/gap blocks. It also allows you to work the fit on different double team blocks and reinforces working from low to high and changing opponent posture.

The V Block Shield has a rounded top edge to give the blocker specific targets for initial strike, and by striking underneath allows for strain on the lift as the shield holder puts downward pressure on the blocker. The blocker can use different hand placements either on, under, or by gripping the sides of the V-shaped shield. This helps to simulate the strike point of the pec of the defender and is easy to work on hand/forearm strike in these types of blocks.

The V Block Shield has reinforced holding straps that the carrier can put his/her arm through, and can also change the angle and holding height of the shield. The shield is a V-shaped design and protects the shield carriers upper body. The width of the shield makes it perfect for training double team and combo blocks, as teammates can fit together before one takes over the block. It has been designed to be carried easily by the shield holder to facilitate moving it into position in open-field practices.

KEY COACHING POINTS
  • The V Block Shield has been designed with the sole purpose of isolating the skill of the blocker dropping their body height as they approach the block/block defeat situation. They are then able to rise through the initial contact point, to contact, to strain and finish. With this training aid the technique can be practised in a controlled safe environment before going “live”. The offensive player can work proper hand strike with good hip/pad level to simulate their strike point.
  • The shield carrier can change the angle of the rounded edge of the V Block Shield to allow different heights of block entry. The training aid encourages excellent timing, accuracy and body movement coming into, through and finishing the block.
  • As a coach, get your player to approach the shield from different angles and speeds – do not always give the player a straight approach. Work on different fits with head up blocks, double teams, and angle blocks.
  • Make sure the player tries a number of different ways of attacking the shield i.e. players can attack front on such as drive or base blocks, or at an angle where the unique shape helps the blocker ‘capture an edge’.
  • As a coach, look for speed of movement and accuracy throughout the drill. The player should always be in control of their body movement, leverage, aim point, foot placement and strong strike.
  • Make sure that the blocker is always dominant in the collision. As confidence comes with using the training aid, both the blocker and the shield carrier can increase the speed of the drill.
