The GSI Tackle-Legs are part of the GSI Performance Technical Training Range and can be used in isolation or as part of the full system of products. These pieces of equipment have been specifically designed and innovated to be more life-like when the player tackles below the waist. The tackle-legs aim to isolate accurate entry height and tackle accuracy, working on key coaching points i.e. shoulder connection, arm wrap, clamp, and grip, to finish the tackle in a strong dominant position.

The Tackle-Legs are made in sections, and are connected by a strong PVC/webbing ‘stretch’ connection that bends at the joint and simulates moving body parts. This brings about the training effect of the tackler having to track, prepare, and connect accurately to bring around a dominant connection.

KEY COACHING POINTS

• As a coach, get your player to approach the GSI Tackle-Legs from different angles and speeds – do not always give the player a straight approach to the legs i.e. hit ground and up, hit ground and roll then back to feet… never make it easy!
• As a coach or player, you can carry the GSI Tackle-Legs by using the strap on top of the hip section, and walk or run it into different positions thus creating a moving target for the tackler.
• You can work on a straight tackle or fatigue the player first, then carry out the tackle so that it puts the player’s skills under more pressure.
• Make sure the player drops their height from 6-10ft (2-3m) away from the legs, eyes on target, and dip time – do not encourage a late drop. The players’ aim is to work on different entry heights i.e. thighs, locking knees, or low chop tackle.
• As a coach, make sure the player is entering the tackle with same foot same shoulder, making contact with the legs first. Within the tackle, make sure the player’s head is correctly placed and is tight in behind the legs.
• The player can add in a dynamic roll once the legs have been tackled, working core and arm strength. Always finish the tackle off – do not roll out of the tackle before it’s completed, finish on top.
